Staying in Pacific Beach, San Diego is it easier to travel to Coronado Island with or without a car?

We only have the car for a week of our stay so ideally wanted to use it to travel to places that are far away… but also on a budget, isit easy to get to Coronado island on the bus/trolley then ferry? or car? and once there walking/ car? thanks!!

Living in Pacific Beach and visiting Coronado on occasion I assure you that you will need a car. To the person who said walking to where you want to go on the island will be only a mile, think again. The island is over 7 square miles so walking will take a considerable amount of time.

The public transportation in San Diego is dysfunctional. By that I mean it just doesn’t conveniently take you to where you want to go in a reasonable amount of time. For example, a 12 minute drive to downtown SD takes 45 minutes to an hour by bus from Pacific Beach. That doesn’t sit well with me.

I guess the main reason is that San Diego is just so spread out and places that attract people are many miles apart.

if you are doing anything in southern california you need a car

and the trolley doesn’t go anywhere near coronado, the closest it probably gets it’s the santa fe station which is about a block or two from the ferry pier

Once you’re on the island it’s about a mile sq. so walking isn’t much of an issue once you’re there. Getting there, San Diego Transit runs a bus from Horton Plaza that runs the length, the ferry drops you off at the far end of most of the touristy stuff so there’s your mile walk. Car would save you the most time for this outing.
