It’s the day after Thanksgiving, and that means it will be Black Friday and the end of the road for half the teams still alive in the CIF San Diego Section playoffs.
The quarterfinal round on Friday night will determine the 20 teams in five divisions that advance to next week’s semifinals, and there are sure to be a few turkeys among the matchups. But there also should be some nail-biters.
Among the top seeds, county No. 1 Helix in Division II has been unstoppable since its opening week loss to Eastlake. The Highlanders host traditional power Torrey Pines, which is only 5-6 this season. In Division I, unbeaten Poway hosts Chula Vista, with a possible rematch against No. 4-seed San Pasqual next Thursday if both avoid upsets. The teams tied during the regular season.
In Division III, Mar Vista (10-1) has lost only to Grossmont but must take on a powerful St. Augustine team at Mesa College. Top-seeded Cathedral Catholic (9-1) appears to have too much firepower for 2-8-1 Lincoln.
The top four seeds in Division IV all have no more than one loss, with No. 2 Madison unbeaten at 9-0-1. Top-seeded Mount Miguel, which lost only to Helix, hosts an 8-3 Coronado team.
In Division V, it’s a Coastal League rematch when La Jolla Country Day takes on No. 4-seeded Bishop’s at La Jolla High. The Knights won the regular season game 35-16. Top-seeded Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach appears to be the class of the division.
