Photos/Video: Blues & BBQ Summer Concert

As Mayor Randy Voepel said, “in Santee they’ll line dance to anything,” and Thursday evening it was some cool blues.

The highlight of the Santee Summer Concert Series, the Blues & BBQ concert, was the most attended of any summer concert the City of Santee has put on.

At least 2,000 people came through Town Center Park to see the show.

The Bill Magee Blues Band, Ben Owens and Len¬†Rainey¬†& the Midnight Players kept Santee’s toes-a-tappin’ throughout the night (see band videos in the media box).

The line for Pinnacle Peak barbecue stretched a good city block for most of the night. If the city was wondering how a food vendor would fare at a Summer Concert, they have a resounding answer.

It was the perfect day for the event. The green grass, some of which lied dormant until recently, stretched from the dancing crowd at the foot of the stage as far as the eye could see, until it merged with the artificial turf in the distance. The heat of the day gave way to a cool breeze blowing through the park just as the Mayor gave the bands the cue to start up the music.

When the crowd was asked by show of hands who lived outside of Santee, at least one third of the crowd raised their hands.

Not a city to leave it’s residents at a blues show out of style, the first 600 attendees were given Blues Brother-style sunglasses.

Let’s hope it was the first of many summer blues shows to come.
