Living In/Around San Diego/Coronado?

We are being stationed to San Diego (North Island, Coronado actually) next December. I know Coronado is outrageously expensive, but we’d like to live within 5-10 miles of the base, if possible. Want a family friendly neighborhood, as we have a 12 year old son, and would definitely like it to be as safe as possible, since hubby is being deployed in January. Would like to buy, if possible – – a town home or single family residence but I know finances will be an issue (our price range would be up to $350k, which I know doesn’t go far in So Cal). I also would like to be close to work – – I don’t have a job set up yet but I work as a paralegal.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what neighborhoods or parts of San Diego to look in?
Many, many thanks in advance for your kind advice.

A lot of the sailors who commute to North Island live along the 94 Freeway. I would look at an area called Rancho San Diego. It’s safe and has decent schools. It’ll only take about 20 minutes to drive to the NAS and 20 minutes for you to drive to a downtown law firm.

I would rent to start. You’ll probably be able to get a cheap house to rent or an apartment. Then you can take your time to look around for a home/condo/townhouse. Don’t worry. House prices are still falling and will not be going up for years. You will not be priced out.

DON’T move to Chula Vista. You are only a few miles to the Mexican border. There’s a joke around here that calls it Chula-juana.

Look around Chula Vista, east off 805 off H Street down to Olympic Road. There’s lots of good neighborhoods there with decent prices. Look into Eastlake, Otay Ranch, etc.

I wouldnt do Chula Vista, I call that the ghetto, even though there are nice places and houses there but its really only one street of nice houses and apartments the rest of the town is GHETTO with capital letters, if you want safety and great neighbors go North of Coronado rather than South wich is where Chula Vista is, also the other peson said go to the 94, I wouldnt go there either its too far for you and 94 is known as the poor freeway because the houses are very cheap, I once went to visit a long lost friend from childhood and I went off Home avenue by the 94 and seriously I was scared to get out of my car at the store, theres lots of gang activity by it, I love love love Mission Valley, to move for rent try La Mirage apartments, google La Mirage apartments San Diego CA, and I also like living at Escala in Mission Valley on Friars Road…safe areas and great people around you. Good luck!

    Escala are condos for sale.
La Mirage apartments are leases for rent.

the farther South you go, closer to Mexico the worse it gets…Chula is only a few minutes from it, hope I helped 🙂
