Islander Girls Blank La Jolla to Win Soccer Regional

Ali Culora (15), shown here in a February game against La Jolla, scored her first goal of the season just seconds into the game Friday to help Coronado to a 3-0 win over the Vikings in the SoCal Regional final.

Coronado High’s Ali Culora picked a great time to score her first goal of the season as far as the Islanders are concerned.

The senior forward sparked the Coronado girls soccer team to the Southern California Regional Division II championship by scoring off the opening possession barely 10 seconds into the Islanders’ 3-0 victory over Western League foe La Jolla High. The game was played Friday evening at Warren High School in Downey.

Fourth-seeded Coronado (16-6-4), which had split a pair of league games with the second-seeded Vikings (16-5-3), overcame an injury-plagued season to win a tournament in which it had lost in the semis the past two years.

Coronado increased its lead to 2-0 at the half on a score by Katie Centeno, and Mary Braun completed the scoring with a goal in the second half. Keeper Cory DeMarco and a solid defense kept La Jolla off the board.
