Holiday Classic Highlights Local Prep Hoop Action

A week of top-notch prep basketball action begins Monday night with the Tipoff Day games in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic, a prestigious boys event now in its 22nd year.

Five divisions will crown champions, with games held at Torrey Pines (National Division, the premier bracket), La Costa Canyon (American), Westview (Governor’s), Cathedral Catholic (Senator’s) and Rancho Bernardo (Mayor’s) high schools.

National power DeMatha Catholic of Hyattsville, MD, is the top seed in the National Division. In a Monday evening play-in game, local powers Lincoln and Army-Navy will meet at 8:35 p.m. at Torrey Pines, with the winner advancing to the National Division and a matchup against DeMatha on Tuesday. The loser will play in the American Division.

The other Monday games at Torrey Pines feature Poway High against county No. 1-ranked and top American Division seed La Costa Canyon at 5:25 p.m. and the host Falcons against Cathedral Catholic at 7 p.m.

Among the other top teams from California in the 78-team field are San Jose Mitty, La Verne Lutheran and Sacramento Sheldon, all in the National Division field.

Besides La Costa Canyon and Army-Navy, other local schools covered by sites in the field include Poway (Governor’s), Rancho Bernardo (Mayor’s) and Carlsbad (Mayor’s).

Girls Basketball: SoCal Holiday Prep Classic

Another five-division prep tournament, this one for girls teams, will be played from Tuesday through Friday at various local high school gyms, with the championship games in all divisions beginning at 2 p.m. Friday at Del Norte High in the Rancho Bernardo area.

In action Tuesday among schools in communities are La Costa Canyon (2 p.m. at Del Norte), Bishop’s (3:30 p.m. at Del Norte), Poway (6:30 at West Hills in Santee), and Carlsbad facing host West Hils at 8 p.m., all in the Tournament of Champions Division.

In the NCAA Division II Division on Tuesday, Coronado plays Mission Hills at Del Norte at 9:30 a.m., and Rancho Bernardo plays Grossmont on the Foothillers’ court at 8 p.m.
