hermit crab? what to feed and where to start, i found a small crab at coronado california beach?

so i was picking up shells today and found a snail-like redish shell and noticed there was a small crab in it. the shell is pretty cracked and has a small hole. it looks like the hermits with the painted shells that they sell in the pet shops so i brought it home along with a small heap of sand, some water, and two teenytiny clams from the beach. now it is in the bottle which i cut into a canoe like shape and set up so the sand goes like in a ramp.that way the crab can be completely submerged or completely dry. my stupid litl brother washed it with tap water but i rinsed it with the beach water again and put it back in the ‘canoe’, it looked fine like it was sccooping things from the water -does that mean it was eating? can i really put a cheerio or p.b. in there for now like i have read on here?also can i put a small toy in there for its new shell instead of a conch?

You probably should take it back to the beach and let it go. Wild animals are not usually very successful at moving into a pet environment. If you insist on keeping it your set up sounds reasonable but go to a pet store and get some crab bites for it so it has proper nutrition. You’ll also need aquarium salt to keep the water brackish for it.

from experince usually they die off because we just can’t quite match the habitat they were moved from. But sounds like you have yours sifting for food. They are very similar to the"land hermit"crabs we buy@pet shop.NO!they have special pellets at pet store(of course appropriat frsh food)but these differ from the ones we buy…toys&extra shell are good.
    Keep salt bath.
If interested i have downloaded/printed fact sheet.
Wont type it cos people on here just seem to s-it on me…

Hey, I used to have a hermit crab, when i cleaned his cage it was so smelly! Anyways, enough for me. Sounds like you have an ideal house for ur crab, with the sand and everything.

For the Food: You can get the food at your local pet shop and put in some cut up apple/fruits/vegs in it’s little house u have for it there.

    Thanks, angie.

    Ok. First, ITS ILLEGAL!!!!
Bringing natural crabs from the nature to your home without permit is illegal. Well, if you have a permit, why don’t you know the habits of the animal you want to pet? Please do research first before you pet an animal.

Anyways, I will help. That was the DARK SIDE of me.
So, get a 5 gallon fish tank. Buy live sand and tons of feeder fish from the pet store. Add the sand and still make the ramp. You should have a submerged part, depends on the size of the crab. It will not drown. No, don’t change it to a toy. Still stick to the conch thing. Put 5 feeder fish in the water. Put added salt if needed. Hermit Crabs are saltwater creatures.

You can buy a small plastic aquarium…put some sand in it…feed the crab either commercial hermit crab food…or feed it corn meal – just place the food in a jar lid on the floor of the aquarium….they also like to climb so put some sticks in their pen….make sure the top is covered with mesh/wire or it might just run free
