Keystone Protest in Coronado Peaceful: No Arrests, Disruptions

coronado home
Update 3:30 p.m. Wednesday with comments from API   About 40 protesters gathered outside Loews Coronado Bay Resort Wednesday to object to the Keystone XL pipeline development, the latest of thousands of rallies across the country against the project. They chose the resort because the American Petroleum Institute was wrapping up a two-day meeting at Loews. The proposed Keystone pipeline would extend from Canada through Nebraska and Oklahoma down to the Gulf of Mexico. Supporters say it will create jobs, increase the nation's ability to produce oil and generate more than $5 billion in tax revenue. But protesters like those on Silver Strand Boulevard outside Loews Wednesday said the green industry would lead to bigger employment boosts with far less damag

2011 CHS Graduate Finishes Ahead of Boston Marathon Carnage

coronado home
If you want to track racers, the Boston Marathon gives you ample opportunity to do so. But Megan Sweeney, a 2011 Coronado High School graduate, has a Massachusetts address now, and she said people were concerned Monday when her name wasn't included by Patch in a list of Coronado runners participating in the race. Of course, it became crucial for loved ones to find runners like Sweeney after two blasts rocked the race, killing three and injuring 176 others. Sweeney, 20, who ran track and field and cross country at CHS, finished her first Boston Marathon in 2 hours, 55 minutes, more than an hour ahead of the explosions. “Probably the first four or five people who called me were from the team,” the Boston College sophomore said. “They knew I was running and just didn

Travel Alert: American Airlines Glitch Fixed, But Delays Continue

coronado home
American Airlines customers from Coronado and the region faced flight delays at Lindbergh Field and other airports across the country Tuesday due to a problem with the company's computerized reservation system. The carrier publicly disclosed the problem in the late morning and then grounded all flights around midday pending further notice. About 1:30 p.m. PDT, the airline announced that the glitch had been fixed, but advised that flight delays and cancellations were likely to continue through the rest of the day. Authorities advised travelers to call to check on the status of their flights before heading to the airport. The airline stated that it was “important to note we see no evidence that today's technical outage is related to (Monday's) tragic events in Bosto

Coronado’s Namesake Ship Suffers Minor Fires at Sea, Navy Says

coronado home
Two small fires were quickly put down aboard the littoral combat ship Coronado during sea trials, the U.S. Navy said, according to DefenseNews.com. The blazes took place Friday as the Coronado was part of trials at sea in the Gulf of Mexico; no one was hurt, the report said. Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka and longtime resident Susan Keith were part of the festivities when the ship was christened last year. DefenseNews said the Coronado was “conducting a full-power demonstration and running at high speed” when insulation in the exhaust system smoldered and caught fire.  A second run of the system led to another small fire. In both cases, according to the report, the fires were quickly extinguished.  The ship was able to return to the Austal USA shipyard in Mobil

Last-Minute Tax Filers: Midway Post Office Will Be Open Until 11 PM

coronado home
You can file your taxes up until the last possible minute online, but if you want to make sure you see the postmark applied to the all-important envelope, you have until 11 p.m. in San Diego. That's when the Midway post office, at 2535 Midway Drive – the only one that will be open late in the region, closes – according to the U.S. Postal Service. Why so few options? The post office says it's because most people file online now. Of course, some procratinators prefer to go old school, so the Midway, but only the Midway, will have extended hours in San Diego County. Need some guidance if you're spending Monday putting the last-minute touches on your 1040s? Here's some tips from the IRS. Here's a little help though: Just look in the media box for your IRS and Californ
