Saluting Gov. Brown: Seeking No More Early Inmate Releases By Judges

coronado home
Seldom do I applaud any politician. But today, I sit up and cheer for Jerry Brown. He is appealing a judicial order to release more inmates from California’s prisons onto California streets or county jails in order to reduce “overcrowding.” Speaking from China, Brown said the magic words, “appeal” and no—even when threatened with contempt of court. The three-judge panel insists that “overcrowding” has impaired the prisoners’ mental health care and has led to “preventable suicides.” Really? Are all suicides preventable? For perspective, there were 15 suicides in the first half of 2012 in the 30 California Department of Corrections prisons. By contrast, there was one suicide every single day in the non-felon population of San Diego in 2011. One a d

It’s Back! Sandcastle Competition Set For June 30

coronado home
A sandcastle competition for adults and children will be held in Imperial Beach June 30, Jim Hutzelman of the Port of San Diego announced Monday. This will be the first organized sandcastle event since the end of the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition in 2011. The event will have an emphasis on community involvement and double as a celebration of the Port of San Diego's 50th anniversary. Hutzelman expects upwards of 20,000 people to attend, far less than the famous U.S. Open, which would bring in hundreds of thousands of people over two days. "It's not going to be huge, but I think we'll get a sizable crowd," he said. Attendees can expect a tumbling and circus act, kids' art show, family events, local vendors and more. "The family attractions on Pier Pl...

Coronado Council Honors Retiring Police Chief Lou Scanlon

coronado home
The city paid tribute to Lou Scanlon, its soon-to-be departed police chief, by proclaiming a day in his name. The honor is typically bestowed on “executive employees or those have shown exemplary service to the city,” City Clerk Linda Hascup said. Though the award may be unexceptional the recipient is not, according to the City Council. Mayor Casey Tanaka said this week that he was none too pleased about giving the award to Scanlon. “This is the kind of proclamation I don’t like – saying goodbye to someone you don’t want to say goodbye to,” he said at the ceremony Tuesday. Scanlon, who was once with the San Diego Police Department, is “no ordinary police chief, Tanaka added. “He brought big-city experience to our small town.”  Tanaka also noted the chief's c

Local Track Club Makes Donation, Shows Support for Boston Victims

coronado home
Two days after a moving moment of silence at a San Diego Track Club practice, club president Kate Garcia said the group would honor the Boston Marathon bombing victims by sending $1,000 to One Fund Boston. At the Tuesday gathering for a regular night practice at San Diego High School’s historic Balboa Stadium, club members also held hands around the track. In an email, Garcia wrote Thursday: “One of the many things l love about our community is how we come together in the good times and the bad. This week has been so challenging for all of us. We are so grateful that all of our Boston runners are unharmed and home now. Personally, I have been overwhelmed with the response from our members asking how they can help and what we can do.
