High Surf, Rain in the Forecast for Coronado

Big waves were expected to crash onto San Diego County beaches south of La Jolla, starting Saturday, the National Weather Service reported. A northwest swell was expected to usher in waves and surf of between 5 and 7 feet at southern San Diego County beaches Saturday with occasional sets could reach 8 feet at peak break points like Sunset Cliffs, according to NWS forecasters. The high surf should impact central county beaches and those in North County on Sunday as the swell becomes more westerly oriented, but the highest surf was still expected to be highest in South County, with sets of up to 8 feet possible. Pre-Christmas DUI Arrests Down from Last Year

California Highway Patrol officers in San Diego County arrested 17 suspected drunken drivers from Friday evening to 6 a.m. Saturday, 13 less than the tally for the same pre-Christmas period last year. No vehicle occupants were was killed during the reporting period that started at 6:01 p.m. Friday, law enforcement agencies throughout San Diego County reported. No fatalities were reported during the first about 12 hours of the reporting period last year either. CHP officers throughout the state arrested 337 suspected drunken drivers on freeways an on roads in unincorporated areas during the reporting period, 110 less than the same time period last year, according to the CHP. Coronado Hires New Assistant Superintendent

Keith Butler will replace Randie Allen as the Coronado Unified School District’s assistant superintendent for finance and business services. Superintendent Jeffrey Felix made the announcement Thursday at the school board meeting after coming to the decision to hire Butler the day before. Interviews had taken place earlier in the week. Butler works as a consultant for business advisory services for the San Diego County Office of Education, where he oversees finances for the district. He has been in his current position three years. He will take up his new post Jan. 9. Previously he was senior program manager at Kaplan Virtual Education and associate dean of extended learning at California State University San Marcos. He also has private sector experience, as a bank
