Author Ann Rule: Someone Killed Rebecca Zahau

The sheriff says she died by her own hand, but Ann Rule says no, Rebecca Zahau was slain. “The physical evidence, her injuries, the way she was tied up—that all seems to veer away from the suicide theory for me,” said Rule, a best-selling crime author and one-time police officer who has been called upon to lecture law enforcement officials from local agencies to the FBI. Her take on the Spreckels mansion case is part of her new crime compilation Fatal Friends, Deadly Neighbors and Other True Cases, released Tuesday.  “I don't think I have ever written an article or a book that puzzled me more than this case,” she said during a phone interview from her Washington state home. That said, it's not surprising that despite the time she's spent on her research, reviewing

Where would be the best place to live in the San Diego area?

coronado home
I am single and planning to move in just a few years. I would like to live outside of the busy cities- I love quiet and slower living. -East Chula Vista (Rencho Del Rey, Eastlake or Rolling Hills Ranch) is laid back. The area is reletively new. Lots of homes were built between 1999 and 2005. They are still building. There are parks, trails, shopping, resturants, and medical centers. Reminds me of Small Town, USA. -Bonita is quiet and laid back. It's tucked into a pocket between Spring Valley, National City, and East Chula Vista. Has a lot of country views with ranches. We used to drive through so our daughter could see the horses. Nice golf course there. It is expensive as well. -The Tierra Santa is laid back and quiet. It's kind of secluded but not far from freeway access. Not many peopl...

Poll: Is Mexico Safe for Americans?

President Obama met Tuesday at the White House with Mexican President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto. “What happens in Mexico has an impact on our society,” Obama said.  But among many issues is security—border safety and the drug war inside Mexico. Only three days earlier, a Mexican beauty queen was killed in a shootout between suspected drug traffickers and soldiers. Peña Nieto invited Obama to visit Mexico any time—an offer Obama said he would consider. Would you? (more…)

Chasing Mavericks: Northern California and the Main Street of Surfing

coronado home
The swell had finally hit. Steamer Lane was 6 to 8 feet on the sets with fun waves and not that many people out. My sons Israel (16), Daniel (14) and I quickly donned our wetsuits and jumped into the lineup. We were on the second part of our Thanksgiving week excursion up the coast of California to visit college campuses in the world's best public university system (Israel is a junior in high school) and hopefully catch a few waves.  Before heading north, we checked out Southern California schools and surf spots. My wife, Emily, flew into San Francisco the day before Thanksgiving and we planed to join my dad, my brother and the rest of our family for a feast. The Lane, a World Surfing Reserve, is ground zero for Northern California surf culture (technically

How is the yellow tail fishing on the Malihini out of San Diego?

coronado home
im going on the 3/4 day trip this summer between june and august. and i was wondering what the average number of fish caught is? so if anyone has been on that boat tell me how you did and what you caught. and what do they give you for bait? I've never fished the Malihini, though I've fished yellowtail off probably a dozen other boats out of San Diego (the 3 landings there are next door to each other, and the boats fish the same areas), and managed anywhere from nothing to limits plus for the boat. The bait will be sardines or anchovies, or if you're lucky, live squid. Or if there's nothing available but small anchovies, you may have to catch mackerel for bait. The yellowtail bite at the Coronado islands or on the Mexican coast (or local areas along the coast) varies considerably -- som...

Is it possible to get around San Diego without renting a car?

coronado home
My family is traveling to San Diego soon, and I would like to know if it is possible to get around the city without renting a car. Our plans are to go to the Zoo, Sea World, the beach, and see the sights. Also if you have any recommendations to what we could do there please add them. Yes... Though whether it's easy or not depends on how big your family is (are there really young kids?), where you plan on staying, and how much time do you have. I suggest you stay in downtown area and get a MTS day pass for each adult (can buy them at vending machines at Trolley stations or at Transit Store at 1st and Broadway). They're $5 a piece and is good on buses and trolley for the day (every Saturday & Sunday, two children 12 and under ride free with any paying passenger 18 and over). You can pic...
