Ringling Bros. Opens Four-Day Local Run Thursday

coronado home
The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus begins a four-day run at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego Thursday night. The circus is on a two-year tour of a mythology-based show "Dragons!" The show presents “dragon tribes from the far reaches of the Earth” performing in a ”circus tournament of champions,” according to the Ringling Bros. website. It also features clowns, acrobats, lions and elephants. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans to stage a demonstration in downtown San Diego at noon to protest what it alleges is the mistreatment of circus elephants, which the group believes should not perform. PETA, which has targeted Ringling Bros. for years, claims circus animal handlers stretch out young elephants during training, slam them to the

A New Era – Opening Day Brings a New Principal to Village Elementary

As Coronado's two public elementary schools, middle school and high school confronted the first day of a new year, Whitney DeSantis and Village Elementary faced a bit more. It was DeSantis' first official day as the new principal at Village Elementary. She looked cool and confident as she waded into the crowd of students and parents assembled in the school's playground, waiting for teachers to lead them to their classrooms. “I’m feeling great. Everything is going smoothly,” she said. Indeed it was. Her new policy of opening the gates before school starts was well received.  Instead of opening just before the bell rings, the gates were unlocked at 7:45 a.m., giving students 20 minutes to mingle with friends before the bell. Five minutes after that they’ll be in the

Poll: Should the Public Cheer WikiLeaks for Posting Government Secrets?

coronado home
WikiLeaks is back in the news with founder Julian Assange — facing sex charges in Sweden — trading accusations with the U.S. government over “witch hunts” and “wild assertions.”  Assange’s archive of previously secret documents from around the world has led to government shake-ups and diplomatic embarrassments.  But not every leak is from a national capital or war zone.  You can find references to a Home Depot in Lemon Grove, a jewelry store in La Jolla and weapons storage at North Island in Coronado. Should WikiLeaks be shut down or applauded for opening up regimes to public scrutiny? (more…)

Perry Tells San Diegans to Follow ‘Biblical Directive’

coronado home
Texas Gov. Rick Perry told a Rancho San Diego megachurch Sunday that congregants have a “biblical directive” to be engaged in politics—but didn’t directly suggest how they should vote. In April, conservative commentator Glenn Beck appeared at the same church and called on clergy nationwide to speak out politically from the pulpit even if it means risking their tax-exempt status under IRS law. “We won’t have a nation if the pulpit doesn’t start preaching the truth,” Beck said. But Perry, the former GOP presidential hopeful, didn’t recommend a candidate in his two sermons at Skyline Wesleyan Church. He told the estimated 2,000 attendees they have an obligation to be involved in the decision-making process. “You have a biblical directive to be engaged in the public a

15 Arrests Made in Countywide Drunken Driving Crackdown

Fifteen people were arrested for drunken driving at 14 checkpoints or special deployments countywide that ended early Sunday. "The Summer/Labor Day National Anti-DUI Crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement," said Lt. David Gilmore of San Diego County Sheriff's Department in a statement. "Last year there was one alcohol-related death during the Labor Day Mobilization. There were no alochol-related deaths reported for this time period this year." The crackdown was part of the AVOID, Anti-DUI Program launched in 1973 to bring law enforcement officers together in countywide clusters to catch drinking drivers and reduce the number of deaths and injuries from alcohol- related crashes. Program funding from state grants all...
