Chargers Game vs. Buffalo Bills on Sunday Blacked Out on Local Television

coronado home
Charger fans will have to listen to Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills on the radio or search for an Internet streaming site, because the game will not be televised in Southern California, the team announced Thursday. The Chargers announced Tuesday that 5,500 tickets needed to be sold by early afternoon Thursday to avoid the NFL's blackout policy. In the two days since, only around 500 were bought. The NFL requires all but the most expensive seats to be purchased by 72 hours before kickoff for the game to be shown on local television. The league usually grants a 24-hour grace period if the team is close, and it was not, in this case. The blackout is the second of the season. The first was Oct. 2 against Miami. –City News Service (more…)

Bicycle Panel Gets to Work

Several members of Coronado's new Bicycle Advisory Committee noted Monday that they can learn from strides other cities have made: They singled out Davis and Long Beach as examples. “We’re just newbies. Davis has been doing this for four decades, we can learn from them,” said Bruce Johnson, who was elected vice chairman of the committee. At its inaugural meeting, the committee also named a chairman, Larry Hoffsteter. Neither he nor Johnson faced competition and both were elected unanimously. The committee was formed to help the bike-mad city implement recommendations made in the Bicycle Master Plan developed last year by an ad hoc committee. Members Johnson and Dan Orr both served on that committee. That plan’s mission and goals serve as a template for the

Will You Talk To Your Kids About the Penn State and Syracuse Scandals?

coronado home
The Penn State and Syracuse University child abuse scandals have focused our attention on the possibility of something like this happening to our own children. Is protecting an allegedly upstanding citizen more important than protecting kids? In the case of Penn State, apparently the answer was yes. Those who witnessed former coach Jerry Sandusky's behavior, or had reason to suspect him, but decided not to act, are equally guilty of this crime. Syracuse basketball's former associate head coach Bernie Fine’s sexual abuse scandal has further increased worries that sports and coaches might be the perfect cover for perpetrators. It seems every community has been touched by similar instances of abuse by a trusted coach. Coronado and La Jolla have experienced their ow

Santana Holds Off Coronado 38-26 to Earn Title Shot

Given the choice as to whether it felt better to record two key sacks or pour the water bucket over the head of coach Dave Gross, Santana High’s Jason Patterson had an easy decision to make. "I like the water," Patterson said amid a wild celebration after the host Sultans defeated Coronado 38-26 in the San Diego Section Division IV semifinals Thursday night. "This felt really good," Patterson added. "We’ve never done this before." The Sultans (11-1) will indeed seek their first-ever CIF title when they play Valley Center on Monday at 10 a.m. at Qualcomm Stadium. This, from a school that came into existence in the mid 1960s when El Capitan was split into two schools and Santee thus had its first high school with Santana. "This is indescribable," said Sulta
