Holiday Classic Highlights Local Prep Hoop Action

A week of top-notch prep basketball action begins Monday night with the Tipoff Day games in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic, a prestigious boys event now in its 22nd year. Five divisions will crown champions, with games held at Torrey Pines (National Division, the premier bracket), La Costa Canyon (American), Westview (Governor’s), Cathedral Catholic (Senator’s) and Rancho Bernardo (Mayor’s) high schools. National power DeMatha Catholic of Hyattsville, MD, is the top seed in the National Division. In a Monday evening play-in game, local powers Lincoln and Army-Navy will meet at 8:35 p.m. at Torrey Pines, with the winner advancing to the National Division and a matchup against DeMatha on Tuesday. Holiday on the Highways: CHP Arrests for DUI Up From Last Year

The California Highway Patrol issued warnings that they would be on the lookout for drivers that have had too much to drink this weekend, but not everyone took their advice. DUI arrests are up significantly from this time last year, both statewide and in Southern California. CHP officers arrested 447 drivers statewide for suspicion of DUI between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m., according to figures released by the CHP. Saturday. Last year the CHP arrested 258 drivers during the same time span. In San Diego County, 30 drivers have been arrested for suspicion of DUI, compared to six last year, and 24 arrests were reported in Orange County, up from 10 last year.
