Construction on the southern runway at Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach finished last week and flights from the runway will resume Tuesday, the Navy said. Over the past few months operations moved to the northern runway, which is closer to homes bordering the field and half the size of the southern runway. Here's more about the construction project. Since July 4th falls on a Monday this year, it's the perfect chance not just for a three-day weekend, but a four-day weekend. From the looks of things on Orange Avenue Friday, people took full advantage. By noon, southbound traffic packed the main street in front of the bleachers the city sets up for Coronado's popular holiday parade. How does Coronado prepare for the thousands upon thousands of people who pack the community for the parade, fireworks, concert and athletic events that start at 7 a.m.? Ricky Fernandez, a city parks supervisor, said the work began in earnest five days ago: Workers fanned out to post 850 “no parking” fliers on poles and parking meters on Orange Avenue, and C and D streets.
