Coronado Appears on National High School Challenge Rankings

coronado home
According to a recent study released in the Washington Post, Coronado High School was ranked in The High School Challenge. The challenge, posted annually by the Washington Post, ranks high schools by a simple formula: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or other college-level tests given at a school is divided by the number of graduating seniors to get the "Challenge Index" score. It is used to determine how well schools prepare their students for college. Of the 27,000 high schools across the country, only 7 percent (or about 1,900) have an index greater than 1.00, which was the baseline to be included on the list. Coronado ranked 401 (out of 1,900) on the list, and had an index of 2.712. The high school ranked 42 in Californ...

This week's Great Escape is so, well... great, that I can't believe I didn't think of it before!  Have you heard of The Learning Playhouse yet? I first caught wind of this local center for children's classes about a year and a half ago. I started sending my oldest there twice a week for music, art and "playschool" classes to get her warmed up for preschool. We had such a positive experience there that I've already got plans to get my 1-year-old started over there next year.  My oldest always attended the Learning Playhouse classes during the week. Well, little did I know that they also offer a little music class on Saturdays from 10-10:45 a.m. That's just enough time to grab a cup of coffee and read a magazine! I don't know about the rest of you, but that's one of my favorite w

Community College Leaders Warn of ‘Educational Armageddon’ in State

The San Diego region’s community colleges face “educational Armageddon” if Gov. Jerry Brown’s budget plan—including a vote on tax extensions—isn’t approved by Sacramento lawmakers, said one of five college district CEOs Tuesday morning. Responding to the so-called May revise of Brown’s budget, Chancellor Cindy Miles of East County’s community college district told media crews and onlookers at Grossmont College that “to cut community colleges is a long-term economic catastrophe for the state and the economy.” Although the May revise, which noted increased tax revenues, was “definitely an encouraging sign,” Miles bemoaned “an extraordinarily uncooperative Legislature unable to move past certain ideological views.” Miles, the La Mesa resident who warned of Armageddon, was joi
